Excellent service, receptionist so helpful kind and understanding, doctor called me back at expected time and script sent to my designated pharmacy immediately. At this stage when doctor surgeries are telling us we have to wait days for an appointment when seriously sick but not an emergency to go to A&E this service is an absolute lifesaver. Highly recommend for service , compassion and professionalism. Thankyou again

Frequently Asked Questions

Please read the FAQs carefully to ensure this service is suitable for you. They contain important information about eligibility, treatment options, and when to seek alternative care.

  • Our prescription service costs €25

  • This service is available to patients anywhere in Republic of Ireland.

  • Yes - this service is based on the same patient-doctor confidentiality that you would expect in a face-to-face consultation.

  • If you’re not entirely sure about your condition and have not had a previous prescription, it is recommended that you first chat with our doctor using either our Video Consultation or Phone consultation services first.

  • Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune skin condition that speeds up the skin cell renewal process, leading to a buildup of thick, scaly patches. These patches—often red, dry, and covered with silvery-white scales—can appear anywhere on the body but are commonly found on the elbows, knees, scalp, and lower back. Psoriasis is a long-term condition that tends to flare up periodically, often triggered by factors like stress, illness, or certain medications. While there’s no permanent cure, effective prescription treatments can significantly reduce symptoms and help manage flare-ups.

  • Psoriasis is believed to be an autoimmune condition, where the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy skin cells, causing them to multiply too quickly. While the exact cause isn’t fully understood, both genetic and environmental factors play a role. The condition often runs in families and can be triggered by things like stress, infections, skin injuries, or certain medications. It’s important to note that psoriasis is not contagious—you cannot catch it or pass it on to others. With the right prescription treatment, many people are able to manage the root causes and reduce flare-ups effectively.

  • Yes, there are several types of psoriasis, each with its own set of symptoms and affected areas. The most common form is chronic plaque psoriasis, which accounts for around 80–90% of all cases. This type typically appears as raised, red patches covered with a silvery-white scale and often affects the elbows, knees, scalp, and lower back—but it can occur anywhere on the body.

    Other types of psoriasis include:

    • Guttate psoriasis – Often triggered by infections, this type causes small, drop-like spots on the skin.

    • Pustular psoriasis – Characterized by white pustules (blisters filled with non-infectious pus) surrounded by red skin, usually on the hands and feet.

    • Nail psoriasis – Affects the fingernails and toenails, leading to pitting, discoloration, and thickening.

    • Palmoplantar psoriasis – Involves the palms of the hands and soles of the feet, often causing painful cracking and scaling.

    • Erythrodermic psoriasis – A rare but severe form that causes widespread redness, inflammation, and skin shedding across large areas of the body.

Understanding which type of psoriasis, you have is key to finding the right prescription treatment to relieve symptoms and manage flare-ups effectively.

  • You may be eligible to request psoriasis treatment through GP24.ie if you:

    • Are over 18 years of age

    • Have been previously diagnosed with psoriasis by a healthcare professional

    • Need a repeat prescription for commonly prescribed psoriasis medication

    • Are not currently experiencing a severe flare-up or medical emergency

    • Do not have any signs of infection

Please note: This service is not suitable for initial diagnosis of psoriasis or for managing uncontrolled symptoms.

  • While there is currently no cure for psoriasis, effective prescription treatments can help you manage symptoms and reduce flare-ups. For mild to moderate chronic plaque psoriasis, the goal is to soothe the skin, reduce inflammation, and clear plaques as much as possible. The right treatment depends on the severity of your symptoms, the location of flare-ups, and how often they occur.

    Common treatment options include:

    • Emollients (moisturisers): These help soften dry, scaly patches, reduce itching, and improve the effectiveness of other treatments. Apply moisturiser first and allow it to fully absorb (typically 30 minutes) before using any medicated creams. Regular use—3 to 4 times daily—is essential, even when your skin is clear.

Important safety note: Dried moisturisers left on clothing, bedding, or hair can be highly flammable if exposed to naked flames (e.g. candles, cigarettes). Always take extra care and wash fabrics regularly if they come into contact with emollients.

    • Topical corticosteroids: These anti-inflammatory creams or ointments help reduce redness, swelling, and itching. They’re often used during flare-ups and come in different strengths depending on the affected area.

    • Vitamin D analogues: Prescription treatments like calcipotriol help to slow down skin cell growth and are commonly used alone or in combination with steroids.

    • Salicylic acid: This helps to break down scales and improve absorption of other topical treatments.

    • Combination therapies: Often, a mix of the above treatments offers the best results, depending on your skin's needs.

Our prescription service can help you find the most suitable treatment plan based on your symptoms and skin type. With consistent use and expert guidance, many people see a significant improvement in their skin health.

  • Through our convenient online psoriasis treatment service, we offer prescription treatments tailored to manage mild to moderate chronic plaque psoriasis. Our treatments target both scalp and body symptoms, helping reduce inflammation, clear plaques, and improve skin comfort.

    Scalp Psoriasis Treatments:

    • Steroid scalp applications – Help reduce redness, itching, and scaling on the scalp.

    • Steroid & salicylate combination treatments – A blend that softens thick scales and enhances steroid absorption for better results.

    Body Psoriasis Treatments:

    • Vitamin D-based ointments – Help slow down the rapid growth of skin cells.

    • Vitamin D & steroid gel – Combines anti-inflammatory and cell-regulating effects in a single formula.

    • Vitamin D & steroid foam – Offers lightweight, easy application with targeted relief for larger or harder-to-reach areas.

Note: These treatments are prescribed for short-term use only (up to 4 weeks). To get the most out of your prescription, it's essential to apply moisturisers regularly—ideally 3–4 times daily—even when your skin looks clear. This helps reduce dryness, enhance treatment absorption, and prevent flare-ups.

For full information on each medication, including potential side effects, please review the relevant product information leaflets linked in your prescription.

  • Our prescribed psoriasis treatments work by targeting the underlying causes of plaque buildup, inflammation, and rapid skin cell turnover. Here’s how each type of treatment helps manage symptoms:

    • Vitamin D analogues: These slow down the overproduction of skin cells that leads to scaling and flaking. By restoring a more natural skin renewal cycle, they help flatten plaques and reduce irritation.

    • Topical corticosteroids (steroids): These powerful anti-inflammatory agents work to calm redness, itching, and swelling. They’re effective at bringing flare-ups under control quickly and are typically used for short-term relief.

    • Salicylic acid: This keratolytic agent breaks down thickened, scaly skin, helping to shed excess cells and improve the absorption of other topical treatments—especially steroids.

Used correctly, these treatments can significantly reduce symptoms and help maintain clearer, healthier skin. Combining them with regular moisturisation boosts their effectiveness and helps protect the skin barrier.

  • All psoriasis treatments can cause side effects, though they are generally mild and manageable—especially when used as directed.

    • Vitamin D-based treatments: The most common side effects are mild and include localised burning, dryness, or itching at the site of application.

    • Topical steroids: When used appropriately (for up to 4 weeks), side effects are minimal. However, overuse or long-term use can lead to thinning of the skin, increased sensitivity, or flare-ups after stopping. To avoid complications, always use the lowest effective strength for the shortest duration, and never apply under airtight dressings or wraps, which can increase steroid absorption.

    • Salicylic acid: On its own, it may cause mild stinging, peeling, or irritation. These side effects tend to be reduced when it’s combined with a steroid in treatment formulations.

If you notice unusual reactions, worsening symptoms, or irritation that doesn’t settle, it’s important to stop treatment and consult a healthcare provider.

  • Stop taking the medication and seek medical advice immediately. You can also contact us for follow-up support or guidance from one of our GPs.

  • Complete an Online Questionnaire: Fill out a secure, confidential medical assessment form detailing your symptoms and health history

Medical Review: An Irish-registered doctor will review your information to determine if treatment is appropriate for you

Prescription Issuance: If suitable, a prescription will be sent directly to your chosen Irish pharmacy via secure Healthmail

  • Yes. To ensure your safety, you’ll need to complete a confidential health questionnaire, which will be reviewed by a Doctor before any prescription is issued.

Your medical information is reviewed only by Irish Medical Council Registered Doctors and is handled in line with GDPR and Irish data protection laws.

  • Your prescription will be sent electronically via the Healthmail system to the Irish pharmacy of your choice - you can nominate any pharmacy in Ireland to receive your prescription

  • Once your medical questionnaire is submitted, prescriptions are typically issued within 24 hours.
