Excellent service, receptionist so helpful kind and understanding, doctor called me back at expected time and script sent to my designated pharmacy immediately. At this stage when doctor surgeries are telling us we have to wait days for an appointment when seriously sick but not an emergency to go to A&E this service is an absolute lifesaver. Highly recommend for service , compassion and professionalism. Thankyou again

Frequently Asked Questions

Please read the FAQs carefully to ensure this service is suitable for you. They contain important information about eligibility, treatment options, and when to seek alternative care.

  • Our prescription service costs €25

  • This service is available to patients anywhere in Republic of Ireland.

  • Yes - this service is based on the same patient-doctor confidentiality that you would expect in a face-to-face consultation.

  • If you’re not entirely sure about your condition and have not had a previous prescription, it is recommended that you first chat with our doctor using either our Video Consultation or Phone consultation services first.

  • Thrush, also known medically as Candidiasis, is a common fungal infection caused by an overgrowth of Candida yeast. While this yeast normally lives harmlessly on the skin and mucous membranes, certain factors can lead to excessive growth, resulting in infection.

Thrush often affects the genital area, with vaginal thrush being more common in women, and penile thrush occurring in men. Symptoms can include itching, irritation, redness, and a thick white discharge. Although not usually a serious health issue, thrush can be very uncomfortable and may recur without proper treatment.

At GP24.ie, we provide fast, discreet access to prescription treatments for thrush, helping you feel better quickly without the need for a clinic visit.

  • Genital thrush is caused by an overgrowth of Candida, a type of yeast that naturally lives on the skin and in the genital area. While it’s usually harmless, certain factors can disrupt the body’s natural balance and allow the yeast to multiply, leading to infection.

Common triggers that increase the risk of genital thrush include:

    • Antibiotic use, which can reduce protective bacteria.

    • Hormonal changes, such as during pregnancy, the menstrual cycle, menopause, or while using hormone-based contraception or HRT.

    • Diabetes, especially if blood sugar levels are poorly controlled.

    • Weakened immune system, which makes it harder to fight off infections.

If you’re experiencing recurring thrush, identifying and addressing any underlying causes can help reduce flare-ups.

  • While genital thrush is common, there are simple steps you can take to help prevent it from coming back:

    • Avoid using perfumed soaps and shower gels, as they can disrupt the natural pH balance.

    • Wear cotton underwear and avoid tight-fitting clothing to reduce heat and moisture.

    • Go without underwear at night to allow the area to stay dry and breathable.

    • If you’re managing conditions like diabetes, keeping blood sugar levels under control can reduce your risk.

  • Genital thrush is usually easy to treat with antifungal medication, and the right option will depend on whether your symptoms are internal, external, or both. At GP24.ie, our doctors can assess your symptoms online and prescribe the most appropriate treatment quickly and discreetly.

    The main treatment options include:

    1. Oral Antifungal Tablets
These are often the most convenient option — taken as a single-dose tablet, they work from within to treat internal thrush symptoms such as discharge, itching, or discomfort.

Please note: The doctor must know about any underlying disease and any medication being taken to prescribe oral treatments.

    2. Antifungal Cream (Topical Treatment)
This cream is applied directly to the external genital area and contains both an antifungal to clear the infection and a mild steroid to soothe irritation, redness, and inflammation. It’s typically used three times a day for up to a week, and provides fast relief for skin discomfort. However, this treatment won’t address internal symptoms.

Please note: This cream can weaken latex condoms and diaphragms, making them less effective at preventing pregnancy and STIs. Use alternative protection during treatment.

    3. Vaginal Pessaries (Internal Tablets, suitable for women)
Pessaries are inserted into the vagina using an applicator and dissolve internally to treat symptoms at the source. They contain econazole, a targeted antifungal agent. Most are used as a once-off dose.

Please note: This can weaken latex condoms and diaphragms, making them less effective at preventing pregnancy and STIs. Use alternative protection during treatment.

  • You may be eligible to request genital thrush treatment through GP24.ie if you:

    • Are over 18 years of age

    • Have been previously diagnosed with thrush by a healthcare professional

    • Need a repeat prescription for commonly prescribed thrush medication

  • Most treatments for genital thrush are well tolerated, and side effects are generally uncommon. However, like all medications, antifungal treatments can occasionally cause mild reactions.

Here’s what you might experience with different types of thrush medication:

    • Oral antifungal tablets: Side effects are rare but may include mild stomach upset, headache, or dizziness. Because the treatment is usually a single dose, these effects are typically short-lived.

    • Topical antifungal creams: Some people may notice local skin reactions such as redness, itching, or a slight burning sensation where the cream is applied. This is usually temporary and should improve with continued use.

    • Vaginal pessaries: Similar to creams, pessaries can sometimes cause mild irritation, itching, or a burning feeling inside the vagina. If irritation becomes severe or persists, it’s important to consult a healthcare professional.

  • Stop taking the medication and seek medical advice immediately. You can also contact us for follow-up support or guidance from one of our GPs.

  • Complete an Online Questionnaire: Fill out a secure, confidential medical assessment form detailing your symptoms and health history

Medical Review: An Irish-registered doctor will review your information to determine if treatment is appropriate for you

Prescription Issuance: If suitable, a prescription will be sent directly to your chosen Irish pharmacy via secure Healthmail

  • Yes. To ensure your safety, you’ll need to complete a confidential health questionnaire, which will be reviewed by a Doctor before any prescription is issued.

Your medical information is reviewed only by Irish Medical Council Registered Doctors and is handled in line with GDPR and Irish data protection laws.

  • Your prescription will be sent electronically via the Healthmail system to the Irish pharmacy of your choice - you can nominate any pharmacy in Ireland to receive your prescription

  • Once your medical questionnaire is submitted, prescriptions are typically issued within 24 hours.

(Please note this may vary on weekends)

  • Yes. If you're eligible and your condition is well-controlled, you can request a repeat prescription for your usual thrush medication via GP24.ie. You’ll need to complete a short medical questionnaire which will be reviewed by one of our GPs. If clinically appropriate, your prescription will be sent directly to your preferred pharmacy.
