Excellent service, receptionist so helpful kind and understanding, doctor called me back at expected time and script sent to my designated pharmacy immediately. At this stage when doctor surgeries are telling us we have to wait days for an appointment when seriously sick but not an emergency to go to A&E this service is an absolute lifesaver. Highly recommend for service , compassion and professionalism. Thankyou again

Frequently Asked Questions

Please read the FAQs carefully to ensure this service is suitable for you. They contain important information about eligibility, treatment options, and when to seek alternative care.

  • Our prescription service costs €25

  • This service is available to patients anywhere in Republic of Ireland.

  • Yes - this service is based on the same patient-doctor confidentiality that you would expect in a face-to-face consultation.

  • If you’re not entirely sure about your condition and have not had a previous prescription, it is recommended that you first chat with our doctor using either our Video Consultation or Phone consultation services first.

  • You can delay your period by taking a prescribed medication that contains a synthetic form of the hormone progesterone. Normally, your progesterone levels drop before your period begins. These tablets help maintain higher hormone levels, which tricks your body into holding off on menstruation. When you stop the medication, your period typically starts a few days later.

This method can delay your period for up to 14 days, depending on how long you take the tablets. Keep in mind that while effective for many women, it’s not guaranteed — some people may experience light bleeding or spotting during use.

  • You may be eligible to request period delay treatment through GP24.ie if:

    • You are 17 years of age or older

    • You were assigned female at birth

    • You need to delay your period for up to 14 days

    • Your next period is not due within the next 4 days

  • Our period delay prescription service is not suitable for you if any of the following apply:

    • You are under 17 years of age

    • Your sex assigned at birth is male

    • You are currently using combined hormonal contraception (e.g. the combined pill, patch, or ring)

    • You are pregnant, think you might be pregnant, or trying to conceive

    • You are breastfeeding

    • You have a history of blood clots

    • You have been diagnosed with or have a history of breast cancer

    • You have cardiovascular conditions, including stroke, heart attack, angina, or stents

    • You have been diagnosed with liver disease

    • You have a medical condition known as porphyria

  • To delay your period, take one tablet three times a day, starting three days before your period is expected to begin. You can continue taking the tablets for up to 17 days, depending on how long you need to delay your period (up to 14 days in total).

When you stop taking the medication, your hormone levels will drop, and your period usually starts within 2 to 3 days.

    • It’s important to start the tablets at least 3 days before your period is due. If you begin later, the medication may not be effective.

    • Period delay tablets are not 100% reliable — some people may still experience spotting or breakthrough bleeding.

    • If your period hasn’t started within 3 days of stopping the tablets and you've had sex, you should take a pregnancy test and consult a doctor.

  • Some people may experience side effects while taking period delay tablets. The most common ones include:

    • Spotting or unexpected bleeding

    • Headaches

    • Bloating

    • Nausea

    • Breast tenderness

The longer you take the medication, the higher the chance of side effects, particularly bleeding or spotting.

For a full list of possible side effects, please read the patient information leaflet that comes with your medication before starting treatment.

If you’re worried about any symptoms while taking this medication, it’s important to seek medical advice promptly.

  • Stop taking the medication and seek medical advice immediately. You can also contact us for follow-up support or guidance from one of our GPs.

  • No — period delay tablets do not provide contraceptive protection.

If you're not using another form of contraception, you’ll need to use a barrier method to prevent pregnancy while taking this medication.

Please remember, this treatment is designed only to delay your period — it does not prevent ovulation or protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

  • If you’re on a combined contraceptive pill (containing both oestrogen and progesterone), you can usually delay your period by skipping the pill-free break and starting your next pack right away — effectively taking your pills back-to-back.

In most cases, this means you won’t need period delay tablets.

If you have any questions or want personalised advice, you can book a GP video consultation with one of our doctors to discuss the best option for you.

  • Complete an Online Questionnaire: Fill out a secure, confidential medical assessment form detailing your symptoms and health history

Medical Review: An Irish-registered doctor will review your information to determine if treatment is appropriate for you

Prescription Issuance: If suitable, a prescription will be sent directly to your chosen Irish pharmacy via secure Healthmail

  • Yes. To ensure your safety, you’ll need to complete a confidential health questionnaire, which will be reviewed by a Doctor before any prescription is issued.

Your medical information is reviewed only by Irish Medical Council Registered Doctors and is handled in line with GDPR and Irish data protection laws.

  • Your prescription will be sent electronically via the Healthmail system to the Irish pharmacy of your choice - you can nominate any pharmacy in Ireland to receive your prescription
