This article explains what medical weight management involves, who it’s designed for, and how GP24 helps patients across Ireland build lasting, healthier habits for life.
What Exactly Is Medical Weight Management?
Medical weight management combines doctor-prescribed medication, lifestyle support, and ongoing clinical monitoring to help you lose weight safely and effectively. It’s not a “quick fix” or a replacement for healthy habits — instead, it’s designed to make it easier to follow a balanced diet, manage appetite, and stay consistent with lifestyle changes.
At GP24, we support steady, sustainable weight loss while improving your overall health — including energy levels, blood pressure, cholesterol, and long-term wellbeing.
Who Is Medical Weight Management For?
Medical weight management is generally recommended for adults who are living with obesity and who may not have achieved lasting results through lifestyle changes alone.
You may be eligible for GP24’s Medical Weight Management programme if you:
Are 18 years or older
Have a BMI between 30-45kg/m2,or 27 kg/m2 or above (28 kg/m2 for Orlistat) with weight-related conditions such as high blood pressure, raised cholesterol, cardiovascular disease, or sleep apnoea
Are committed to following a clinician-guided nutrition and exercise plan
Are seeking oral or injectable medical weight loss treatment as part of a structured programme
Medical weight management may not be suitable if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, under 18, over 65, or have certain medical conditions such as diabetes, thyroid disorders, gallbladder disease, or pancreatitis. Your GP will always assess your health history before recommending any treatment to ensure it’s both safe and appropriate.
If medication isn’t right for you, we also offer a free 15 minute Ask The Expert appointment with Spectrum Health’s Lead Dietitian, Karen Greer. During this appointment, Karen will discuss our services to help you make the right decision for you.
How Do Medical Weight Loss Treatments Work?
Weight management medications support healthy, sustainable weight loss by helping to control appetite, reduce cravings, or limit fat absorption — depending on the type of treatment prescribed.
There are two main forms of medical treatment provided by GP24:
Oral Weight Loss Medication
Usually taken three times daily with meals that contain fat, oral medication works by reducing the absorption of dietary fat by around 30%. To work effectively — and to minimise side effects — it must be used alongside a balanced, low-fat diet.
Injectable Medication
Injectable treatments are typically taken once a week using a pre-filled pen. These medications mimic natural hormones that regulate appetite and digestion, helping you feel fuller for longer and making it easier to stick to a reduced-calorie diet.
Your doctor will discuss which option (if any) is most appropriate for your health profile and goals.
What to Expect During GP24’s Medical Weight Management Programme
1. Questionnaire
After reviewing our FAQs, click “Get Started” to access our secure payment page. Once payment is completed, you’ll receive an email with a link to a short online questionnaire.
This questionnaire takes around five minutes to complete and helps our doctors understand your medical history, health goals, and current challenges. Your responses allow us to determine whether medical treatment is suitable for you and to prepare a plan that’s safe and effective.
2. Initial Consultation
Next, you’ll have a 30-minute video consultation with one of our specialist doctors. During this session, your doctor will review your medical background, current medications, and lifestyle, and carry out a general health assessment.
Together, you’ll agree on a safe, realistic treatment plan tailored to your individual goals and health needs.
3. Education & Treatment
If treatment is appropriate, your doctor will explain how your prescribed medication works, how to take it safely, and what results to expect. You’ll receive practical advice on nutrition, exercise, and healthy habits to maximise your progress and support long-term success beyond medication alone.
4. Monthly Check-Ins
Regular monthly reviews are an essential part of your programme. During each check-in, your doctor will monitor your progress, address any side effects, and adjust your dosage or treatment plan as needed.
These follow-ups keep your journey safe, effective, and personalised — ensuring you stay supported and motivated every step of the way.
What Results Can You Expect?
While individual results vary, clinical studies show that when combined with lifestyle changes, most people lose between 10-15% of their body weight over a 1 year period using medical weight management treatments.
The real value, however, lies in improved health outcomes — from better blood pressure and cholesterol control to more energy, confidence, and quality of life.
The focus isn’t on short-term weight loss, but on building sustainable habits that support long-term health.
Is Medical Weight Management Safe?
Yes — when prescribed and monitored by qualified healthcare professionals, medical weight management is a safe and effective option.
All treatments are prescription-only and tailored to your individual health profile. At GP24, we will review any medications you’re taking, discuss possible side effects, and recommend the best way forward.
Common side effects vary depending on the medication but may include mild digestive symptoms (for oral treatments) or nausea (for injectables). These effects are generally temporary and improve as your body adjusts.
If you ever experience concerning side effects, your doctor will guide you on the safest next steps — including alternative options if needed.
Building Healthy Habits Alongside Medical Support
Even with effective medication, lifestyle changes remain essential. Your treatment is designed to make it easier to follow a healthy routine — not to replace it.
Combining your medical plan with:
Balanced, nutritious meals
Regular, enjoyable physical activity
Mindful eating and emotional wellbeing support
creates the foundation for lasting success.
